Quercus palustris

Description

An attractive, majestic, deciduous tree with a strong central leader, ascending upper branches and horizontal/drooping lower branches. The shiny, dark green leaves have deeply cut, pointed lobes. They turn a deep red to bronze in late Autumn, or a brilliant scarlet in colder areas and often persist over Winter. Re: flowers, male catkins are grey-green to tan and female flowers are yellow-green to tan. Flowers develop into light brown acorns. Pin Oak prefers full sun and performs best on moist, well drained, acidic soils but is quite resilient and adapts to both wet or dry, sandy or clay soils. Withstands moderate drought, air pollution and strong winds. A stately street or avenue tree, it is also good for difficult sites, parks and larger gardens. It may be necessary to prune lower branches to allow car and pedestrian access.
