Livistona australis
Cabbage Tree Palm, Fan Palm, Cabbage Palm
Description
A tall, slender Australian native palm with a trunk diameter up to 0.5m wide, marked with annular scars and furrows. It is crowned with dark, glossy green, stiff, fan-like leaves on 1-2 metre long stems. Flower spikes with cream-white flowers are borne during Summer. The fleshy fruit is red turning black. This palm grows best in moist, organically-rich soils and thrives in full sun or part shade. It is salt, frost and wind tolerant and can be planted in swampy sites or in coastal areas. Good for rainforest regeneration purposes or as feature or sentinel plantings. It is not a self-cleaning palm and old fronds persist beneath the new leaves.
